FAQ: What's the HMS appliance replacement policy?

When you've invested in an HMS® Home Warranty, you won't ever have to pay expensive repair bills if one of your systems or appliances has a mechanical problem. Instead, you'll pay your low deductible and we'll have the broken item repaired or replaced. There are different considerations that go into the decision of whether to replace your appliance or system, so here are the answers to the most common questions.

Deciding factors
Once you've filed a service claim with HMS, one of our pre-screened service professionals will come to your house and diagnose the problem. He or she will gather information about the appliance and send the information back to HMS. From there, a decision will be made as to whether to repair or replace the appliance or system. The two main factors that go into the decision are the cost of the repairs and the average life expectancy of the item. If the repairs will be more than 50 percent of the cost of a new appliance or system, HMS may recommend the item be replaced. Similarly, if the product is near the end of its expected life span, it might make more sense to replace it altogether.

Replacement policy
In the event that HMS decides it's more logical to replace your appliance or system, your home warranty will cover the costs of a new item of like kind. Your replacement product will have the same primary functions and capacity as the original item, but we aren't liable to provide an exact match in terms of color, material, type or name brand.

Alternatively, you can choose to receive a cash payment in lieu of a repair or replacement. You're entitled to a credit equal to the lesser of our approved replacement estimate. To receive a cash payment, you'll need to provide documentation that proves the item in question has been purchased, replaced or repaired. Only upon receiving adequate documentation will HMS send the payment.

Appliance or system upgrades
Many customers ask if they can upgrade the appliance or system that needs to be replaced. The short answer is no, but you can apply your claims credit to any model of the appliance. When you choose to receive a credit in lieu of a replacement, you can upgrade the product at your own discretion.
